SESSION 8

Religious Torment of Children

Albrecht Durer's woodcut, "Apocalypse - The Seven Candlesticks"

In his introduction (p. xi), Donald Capps asks the following questions: "What if religion qua religion is inherently disposed toward the abuse of children? What if it is not just a matter of a few bad apples in every basket, or just a matter of institutional policies that might be blamed for contributing to the problem, but that religion qua religion places children at risk of being the subjects of abuse?" After reading Capps' book and considering his proposals, which Christian beliefs and practices do you think run the risk of harming children and how would you describe the problem they pose?  Are there any particular arguments or positions in Capps' book which you would like to challenge or develop further?

Read Donald Capps, The Child's Song.
